<h2>Social Media Integration at Boston&#8217;s Laidlaw Group</h2>
<p>For the last three years, we have focused on integrating social media platforms into our clients marketing communications programs. The social media channels have produced a substantial increase in brand awareness for our clients. This recent article from <a href="http://adage.com/channel/digital/20" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/adage.com/channel/digital/20?referer=');">Ad Age Digital</a> is worth a read.</p>
<p>Facebook is prepping for a massive IPO, Twitter is focusing its business exclusively on advertising and nearly three-fifths of digital decision-makers polled last fall said they plan to boost their social media ad spend over the next 12 months.</p>
<p>In an Advertiser Perceptions semiannual survey of nearly 1,200 people involved in deciding how ad dollars are spent digitally, 59% of respondents said they would increase social-media-ad spending in the next 12 months, compared with just 4% who said they would decrease spending on social platforms.</p>
<p>The survey also found that, on average, social media advertising will make up about 27% of digital budgets over the next 12 months, compared with 22% in the previous 12 months. No other digital category &#8212; including ad networks/exchanges, media companies, demand-side platforms, portals and agency-trading desks &#8212; expect to see in-budget share gains over the next 12 months.</p>
<p>About 60% of respondents work for agencies and 40% for brands, covering the Ad Age Top 100 advertisers in the process.</p>
<p>&#8220;The one area that marketers were more bullish on than agencies is social,&#8221; said Randy Cohen, co-founder and president of Advertiser Perceptions, which is expected to release the full results Tuesday afternoon.</p>
<p>Agency-trading desks, which handle bulk-audience buying on behalf of clients, was the only digital category in which respondents said they would decrease rather than increase spending over the next 12 months. Sixteen percent of respondents said they plan to reduce trading-desk outlays; 15% said they would raise them.</p>
<p>One strong caveat: The results indicate what decision-makers intend to do about allocating ad dollars. Results and other factors will ultimately determine what they actually spend, and Mr. Cohen said that while marketers feel they should be spending on social platforms, they are doing so without clear insights as to why. &#8220;From a results perspective &#8230; I think the jury is still out,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>But what it does mean, if you&#8217;re in the business of selling social, is that the doors are open and, in many cases, the checkbooks are out.</p>
<p>The leading digital advertisers believe that half of their budgets in the next 12 months will be spent on brand-focused advertising. That number was just 25% or 30% three or four years ago, Mr. Cohen said.</p>

<p>&#8220;This Sunday night, millions of viewers will tune into the Academy Awards to find out who takes home film’s top honors—and see who makes the &#8216;Best Dressed&#8217; lists. To capitalize on the red carpet obsession, the People franchise is rolling out e-commerce and social media initiatives to put readers in the middle of the sartorial whirlwind that is the Oscars.</p>
<p>&#8220;&#8216;Red carpet is the most anticipated coverage of the year among our readers,&#8217; People publisher Karen Kovacs told <a href="http://www.adweek.com/" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.adweek.com/?referer=');">Adweek</a>.</p>
<p>To capitalize on that buzz, the magazine is sending subscribers an Awards Show Special issue spotlighting the season’s best red carpet fashions. To boost newsstand sales, People struck a partnership with <a href="http://www.redbox.com/" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.redbox.com/?referer=');">Redbox</a> to give single-copy buyers a free one-night movie rental.</p>
<p>&#8220;People also is jumping on the e-commerce bandwagon this year. People.com Stylewatch editors will curate items inspired by the evening for a &#8216;Get the Look: Red Carpet&#8217; sale on <a href="http://www.gilt.com" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.gilt.com?referer=');">Gilt Groupe</a>. If the content-only partnership is successful (the magazine isn’t getting any cut of sales), it could lead to further e-commerce collaborations, Kovacs said.</p>
<p>&#8220;That red carpet frenzy is also evidenced on <a href="http://www.people.com/people/" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.people.com/people/?referer=');">People.com</a>, which gets its biggest traffic boost of the year on the day after the Oscars, according to People.com managing editor Janice Morris. In addition to covering the event&#8217;s fashion moments, People.com is encouraging readers to interact with the site through a live blog on the site and social media.</p>
<p>&#8220;Last year’s live trivia competition will return to People.com, but it will feature a new <a href="http://www.facebook.com/peoplemag" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.facebook.com/peoplemag?referer=');">Facebook</a> tie-in that lets participants play with their friends. <a href="http://pinterest.com/people/" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/pinterest.com/people/?referer=');">Pinterest</a> boards focusing on Oscars and red carpet fashion will be updated with photos from the evening. And <a href="http://www.twitter.com/peoplemag" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.twitter.com/peoplemag?referer=');">People’s Twitter account</a> will promote People.com content and encourage people to make their own best-dressed lists.&#8221;</p>

<p><strong>How Smart Phones Influence Buying</strong><br />

<p>&#8220;Does mobile drive shopping? Well, it depends.</p>
<p>&#8220;According to research Google and Ipsos conducted over the 2011 holiday period, smartphone devices play a role at different parts of consumers’ paths to purchase, but they do so in different ways for different people.</p>
<p>&#8220;For example, 41 percent of those who used their mobile phones to help with shopping said they purchase directly from the device itself, while 37 percent claimed to have researched on a phone before purchasing on a desktop. Meanwhile, 46 percent of respondents said they’ve researched items on a smartphone before going in the store to buy, and, interestingly, 19 percent have researched products both on a smartphone and in-store before purchasing online.</p>
<p>&#8220;An interesting point to note from the 600-person survey is the number of users that went in-store to research but opted to purchase online instead. This likely reflects the cheaper price-points often offered online, but it suggests consumers still like to see products in person before committing to a purchase.&#8221;</p>

<p>Over the years, we have had the opportunity to work with many great clients. They have included Fortune 500 CEO&#8217;s, passionate entrepreneurs, successful retailers, up and coming manufacturers, government agencies, high-powered executives, sports icons and charitable organizations who have each, in their own way, left an indelible mark on us.</p>
<p>As often as I talk about the impact these relationships have had on our careers and how they have influenced the culture of Laidlaw Group, I don&#8217;t think I have ever actually defined what we consider to be a great client.</p>
<p>A great client allows us to take them out of their comfort zone and believes in us. They believe that with our guidance, their brand will soar to new heights. They trust that we bring our experience, expertise, commitment and creativity to their project, and they know that we judge our success by results. We realize that we will never know their business as well as they do, but great clients know that our experience and objectivity often lead to new discoveries and unearthed opportunities that would never have been found without their willingness to trust us and be open to change. More importantly there comes a point when they join us on our journey to define them, and we truly work together. Walls come down and communication channels open up. It is a very rewarding moment for us.</p>

<p>Now, we want to share another incredible story of selfless giving from yet another client. Founder of <a href="http://www.corporateaccents.biz/" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.corporateaccents.biz/?referer=');">Corporate Accents Unlimited</a> and eco-friendly promotional products website <a href="http://greenpromotionalitems.com/" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/greenpromotionalitems.com/?referer=');">Green Promotional Items</a>, <a href="http://greenpromotionalitems.com/" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/greenpromotionalitems.com/?referer=');">Gerri Weiner</a>, was able to save the life of a boy she had never even met half a world away in 2005.</p>
<p><span id="more-844"></span>Her story begins in March 1992. <a href="http://greenpromotionalitems.com/" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/greenpromotionalitems.com/?referer=');">Gerri </a>saw a television story about a young local girl in need of a bone marrow transplant and decided to attend the blood drive the girl’s family had set up in the slim chance she was a match. <p>Nearly 13 years passed when on a random late December day in 2004, <a href="http://greenpromotionalitems.com/" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/greenpromotionalitems.com/?referer=');">Gerri </a>received an  unexpected call. She explained when the phone rang, “I expected to hear one of my clients asking me a question but instead I heard a voice say,  ‘Are you the <a href="http://greenpromotionalitems.com/" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/greenpromotionalitems.com/?referer=');">Gerri Weiner</a> who gave blood for a bone marrow drive held in Peabody, Massachusetts 13 years ago?’ I was so surprised! I had to stop and think for a minute as it had been so long, and I had not even thought of it in years.” The caller had actually found <a href="http://greenpromotionalitems.com/" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/greenpromotionalitems.com/?referer=');">Gerri’s</a> contact number online via her company <a href="http://www.corporateaccents.biz/" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.corporateaccents.biz/?referer=');">Corporate Accents’ </a>website! As it turned out, her information had come up for a         potential match on the HLA Registry (a medical center part of The National Marrow Donor Program) and she was asked to come in for additional testing.</p>

<p>On May 19, 2005, <a href="http://greenpromotionalitems.com/" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/greenpromotionalitems.com/?referer=');">Gerri </a>underwent the surgery and anxiously awaited updates. While she did have to give additional platelets to help the recipient fight infection after his transplant, <a href="http://greenpromotionalitems.com/" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/greenpromotionalitems.com/?referer=');">Gerri </a>received the first letter from the recipient’s, Asad, family in March 2006. Learning Asad was healing and doing well, <a href="http://greenpromotionalitems.com/" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/greenpromotionalitems.com/?referer=');">Gerri </a>could not have been happier. As she learned more about the boy’s background, <a href="http://greenpromotionalitems.com/" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/greenpromotionalitems.com/?referer=');"> Gerri </a>said, “I am an American Jewish woman, who by some miracle, was able to help this little Pakistani baby.” Although these individuals were worlds apart, <a href="http://greenpromotionalitems.com/" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/greenpromotionalitems.com/?referer=');">Gerri’s</a> generosity was literally life-saving! <a href="http://greenpromotionalitems.com/" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/greenpromotionalitems.com/?referer=');">Gerri </a>has kept in touch with Asad and his family and was able to meet them in Germany in the summer of 2008, an experience she calls “the trip of a lifetime.”</p>
